Lube 101: Your Ultimate Shopping Guide

Lube 101: Your Ultimate Shopping Guide

Sexual lubricant, better known as “lube,” isn’t only a fun addition to the bedroom – it can completely transform sexual play. In fact, it can take sex, solo or otherwise, from meh to amazing. Despite its virtues, there are common misconceptions around lube: like it is used to counter sexual dysfunction, or if vaginas are aroused, they always produce their own lubrication. These ideas are total myths that need to be dispelled. Many vaginas produce little or no lubricant, and not everywhere we play produces lube. Never fear, my dear! We’re here to tell you lube that has a place in all of our bedside drawers.

Before we get started…

Not all lubricants are made equal. Growing research shows that many lubricants on the market can be detrimental to vaginal, and overall health – they can even increase the likelihood of contracting an STI (See more on Osmolality). Avoid products containing chlorhexidine gluconate, parabens, petroleum jelly, propylene glycol, benzene, benzoic acid, microbicide, nonoxynol-9, glycerine, or vague ingredients like “aromas.”

Please note: Do not use silicone lubricant with silicone toys, or store touching silicone toys. They will melt!

Silicone-Based Lube

Silicone lubricant lasts longer than other lubes and is compatible with condoms. It’s extra slippery and needs to be washed off of the body with soap – so it’s great for shower play (Don’t worry about washing your vagina and anus: their natural cleaning systems have you covered).

We suggest: Uberlube Silicone Lube

Water-Based Lube

Water based lubricant is a jane of all trades. It’s compatible with condoms and all sex toys. It’s easy to clean up and doesn’t stain. It can dry out faster than silicone-based lubes, but you can reapply as many times as you’d like.

We suggest: Sliquid Organics Natural Lubricant

Oil-Based Lube

Oil based lubricants are super luxurious and can be deliciously scented. They’re great for massage and masturbation. Pay attention to the ingredients and ensure they’re body safe. Keep in mind, they’re incompatible with condoms!

We suggest: Province & Apothecary Sex Oil

Now go explore!

No matter if you want more lubrication during sex, during anal play, for new sensation, for masturbation, for massage, or more – we have the answer: pick some out and give it a try!
